Memory Jug #5
Maddy Inez Leeser
Text from the artist: I started making memory jugs in 2020 while meditating on generational magic. My grandmother has a collection of memory jugs in her house–– vases, jugs, chairs adorned with objects. The tradition of the jugs memorializes the dead with objects associated with their life. They are also called spirit jars and memory vessels. Collecting has always been a part of my family's tradition, seeing the history and value of an object based on the spirits and energies that have encountered it. The work represents fleeting moments in my studio, collections of reclaimed clay, coils and broken scraps. They memorialize my gestures that are imbued in the clay as physical traces of my touch.
Materials: Glazed stoneware
